Long before MIST was founded, dedicated naturalists were already sharing their love of Mitlenatch Island with visitors. This photo, taken on 11 June 1967 by R. Wayne Campbell, shows Ken Kennedy — a summer naturalist who spent four years on the island — leading a guided walk and introducing a group to the island's remarkable flora and fauna.

Ken is still an active volunteer with MIST today, and that same spirit of sharing and discovery lives on in the work our wardens do every season.

The tradition of careful observation that Ken practised in 1967 continues through MIST's Plant Phenology program, which now tracks when more than 30 different plant species bloom on the island — including their Indigenous plant names.
